Capoeira is a collective art form that brings together dance, music, acrobatics and martial arts. Created four centuries ago by African slaves in Brazil in their struggle for freedom and survival, capoeira was still illegal to practice until the 1930's, but since then has acquired enormous popularity among people of all ages and backgrounds in Brazil and throughout the world. Practiced in a communal setting, within a circle of players or "roda," and set to a hypnotic, pulsing rhythm, capoeira calls for intuition, skill, grace and physical strength.

Here in Madison, Omulu Capoeira is one group that meets and trains in two different ways. The UW Capoeira Club is accessible only to those with University ID's for the most part (students, faculty, etc.) since we use University buildings, and the community group is open to anyone and trains at The Monkey Bar Gym. There is an email list which members should join for communications purposes.
The UW club has classes as listed on the schedule below. Please feel free to drop by any class and check it out. Our locations do require a University ID for admittance, but non-University persons are encouraged to look into community classes at The Monkey Bar Gymnasium. Those in California can check out Omulu San Franciso, the group that we are an extension of.
